The Department of Orthopaedics of Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University , which was established in 1978, gradually developed into a comprehensive department possesing certain size and ability after more than 30 years of vigorous efforts. So far, there are 2 doctoral supervisors, and 5 master's supervisors. Sixty-three sickbeds are now available. The whole department was divided into many professional groups, such as spine, joints, trauma, foot and ankle, sports medicine. There are more than 170,000 outpatients and emergency cases, and more than 2000 operations each year. The spine professional group mainly treats various complicated disease such as cervical, thoracic, lumbar degenerative diseases, spinal deformity, spinal tumor and spinal tuberculosis, etc. The treatment methods include various minimally invasive spine surgeries (MISS), anterior and posterior open surgery, cervical and lumbar radiofrequency ablation, minimally invasive vertebroplasty, and transforaminal endoscope. The trauma professional group is responsible for the treatment of various complex trauma, complex fractures of each location, traumatic sequelae, etc. The joint group mainly treats all types of joint diseases, and carries out artificial hip, knee, shoulder and elbow joint replacement and revision surgery. The sports medicine group performs knee, hip, shoulder and ankle arthroscopic surgery, arthroscopic knee ligament reconstruction, etc. The foot and ankle group performs corrective procedure for hallux valgus, toe arthritis and various complex ankle deformity, in addition to a variety of bone and soft tissue tumor resection.

Under the leadership of the current director Professor Lu Shibao, relying on the National Center for Geriatric Diseases Clinical Research, a clinical diagnosis and treatment system centered on elderly orthopaedic diseases has been established, and an elderly orthopaedic ward, an elderly green fast path, and a multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment system have been established .Nearly 100 spine open surgeries for the elderly patients over 75 years old are completed every year. Professor Lu Shibao is one of the earliest experts who developed spinal non-fusion technology in China. He is expert in cervical and lumbar disc replacement and lumbar posterior dynamic stabilization technology. He advocates individual escalation therapy strategies, including minimally invasive techniques, non-fusion and fusion techniques. The Department of Orthopaedic of Xuanwu Hospital is one of the first hospitals to promote the concept of “knee-protection” in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. It has done a lot of work in Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty(Oxford, ZUK) and Periknee Osteotomy. More than 100 cases of unicompartmental knee arthroplasty are carried out every year.

Moreover, the Department of Orthopaedic of Xuanwu Hospital Capital Medical University also possesses abundant scientific research strength. In the past five years, it has taken more than 20 topics at various levels including nation, ministry and Beijing municipal. The department staff has edited and translated nearly 20 academic monographs. And more than 100 papers have been published in professional journal in China and abroad.
