Vascular Surgery

The vascular surgery department of Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University is one of the earliest vascular surgery centers in China. In the early 1980s, Prof. Zongjun Dong and Prof. Jian Zhang, as leaders of our department, first used balloon angioplasty to treat renal artery stenosis in China. This plays a pioneering role in endovascular field in China. Prof. zhong-gao Wang，academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, has been still working in a leading position in vascular surgery department of Xuanwu Hospital, he is called “the first chief expert in vascular surgery of China”. He is good at research, diagnosis and treatment of large vessel diseases, such as the pathogenesis, pathophysiology, epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of Budd-Chiari syndrome. He invented more than ten kinds of surgical procedures which made the mortality of Budd-Chiari syndrome dropped from 90% to below 10%. He also achieved the International leading level in surgical treatment of Takayasu’s arteritis and other large vessel diseases. Professor Zhonggao Wang has done nearly all-round researches in vascular surgery with the building of a solid foundation in both basic and clinical research. Under the guidance of Pr. Wang and after years of research with great concentration, Prof. Yong-quan Gu has made many achievements in surgical treatment of diabetic lower extremity ischemia, he has also got many great performances in surgical treatment of Takayasu’s arteritis, aortic disorders and aorto-Iliac occlusive disease.

After many years of endeavors, the ever-growing vascular surgery department has made many great progresses and aquired some scientific awards, such as First Award of Huaxia Medical Science and Technology Award in 2014, First Award of Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award in 2015, First Award of Huaxia Medical Science and Technology Award won in 2016. Second Award of Beijing Science and Technology Progress Award in 2009 and Third Award of Beijing Science and Technology Progress in 2010. The Vascular surgery department now has 46 beds with first-class hybrid operating room and intensive care unit. There are two advanced digital angiographic machines and relevant professional surgical team that focuses on both clinical and basic research work with excellent laboratory conditions. Since 2002, our department has acquired and completed more than fifty research grants, including the national 863 plans projects, the “tenth five-year plan”, "eleventh five-year plan" and "twelfth five-year plan" national project, national natural science grants and the capital health research and development project. The ongoing research project includes capital health cultivation project, research on clinical application with capital-characteristic of Beijing science and Technology Commission, sailing plan, Dengfeng( mountain-climbing) plan, "Ten, Hundred, Thousand talented People Project" Beijing Municipal Health Bureau key project, traditional Chinese medical science and technology development funds-the annual planning and some research project on medical education. The accumulated research fund was more than 80 million RMB. Professor Yong-quan Gu is now leading a new 13th Five-Year national key R&D projects (special funds 14.3 million RMB).

In the work of medical education, our department undertakes the teaching and training tasks of undergraduate and postgraduate students of Capital Medical University and post-graduate doctors from all over the country. The surgical teaching team led by Prof. jian Zhang won the National Excellent Teaching Team Award. Professor. jian Zhang was also honored as “Teaching Master of Beijing ".

The vascular surgery institute has kept extensive and close contact with domestic and international vascular surgery fields or universities such as the Yale University, John Hopkins Medical School and other well-known institutions. Our vascular surgery department conducts many international and domestic academic conferences and training courses each year, and we also participate in academic conferences actively held by domestic and foreign counterparts each year. We regularly invite famous foreign vascular experts to our department for new ideas and techniques. It’s our responsibility to promote the continuous progress of vascular surgery in China.
