The Department of Neurology, Xuanwu Hospital Capital Medical University was founded in 1959. It is one of the pioneering bases of neurology in China, undertaking tasks of treatment, teaching and scientific research of neurological disease. With almost 60 years of dedicated efforts by the old generation of neurologists such as Professor Zhenxiang Xiao, Jiamei Meng, Mingchen Ding, and the following department directors such as Professor Gangzhi Wei, Xiaoxian He, Zhenying Yan, Jianping Jia, and Yuping Wang, the Department of Neurology, Xuanwu Hospital has developed from 8 beds initially to 200 beds and 310 employees nowadays, becoming one of the national centers of treatment, teaching and research of neurological diseases. The Department of Neurology, Xuanwu Hospital Capital Medical University ranked top in Neurology in year of 2015 and 2016 Science and Technology Influence of Chinese Hospitals, as a National Key Discipline and National Key Clinical Specialty.

The Department of Neurology of Xuanwu Hospital has solid medical strength, with 16 sub-specialties, 36 special outpatient clinics, and up to 600,000 outpatients annually. The Department of Neurology also has two national clinical diagnosis and treatment centers (Quality Control Evaluation Center of National Health and Family Planning Commission for Brain Injury, National Remote Stroke Center) , 4 Beijing clinical diagnosis and treatment centers (Beijing Neurology Consultation Center, Beijing Cerebrovascular Disease Center, Beijing Epilepsy and Sleep Disorders Center and Beijing Geriatric Care and Diseases Control Center), as well as the Centers of Psychosomatic Diseases Consultation and the Center of Combination of Chinese Traditional and Western Medicine for Encephalopathy, etc.. Moreover, the Department of Neurology lead or participated in the compiling of 26 guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases at home and abroad.

The Department of Neurology, Xuanwu Hospital Capital Medical University also has solid scientific research strength. It has two national research institutions (National Clinical Research Center of Geriatric Diseases, National Engineering Laboratory), one provincial key laboratory (Key Laboratory of Neurodegenerative Diseases of the Ministry of Education), 4 Beijing key Laboratories (Beijing Key Laboratory of Translational Medicine of Cerebrovascular Diseases, Beijing Key Laboratory of Regulation and Treatment of Brain Functional Diseases, Beijing Key Laboratory of Translation of Hypoxic Adaptation, Beijing Key Laboratory of Cognitive Impairment of the Elderly) , 2 Beijing research centers (Beijing Research Center of Geriatric Medicine, Beijing Research Center of Plateau Adaptation and Rehabilitation), as well as Neurology Laboratory, Neurological Pathology Laboratory, and Institutes of Alzheimer's Disease and Parkinson's Disease under the Institute of Brain Diseases, etc.. With excellent laboratory facilities and advanced equipment, the lab of neurology department can independently complete experiments ranging from molecular biology, cytology, to experimental zoology etc..

The Department of Neurology, Xuanwu Hospital has published thousands of papers, received more than 160 funds with a total amount of 140 million RMB and more than 20 scientific research awards at the provincial and ministerial levels. In addition, our department won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2013, the Second Prize of the National Award for Science and Technology Progress, the second prize of the Science and Technology Award of Chinese Medical Association, the second prize of the Science and Technology Award of the Ministry of Education, and more than 20 patents.

The Department of Neurology, Xuanwu Hospital has outstanding achievements in teaching as ‘National Outstanding Teaching Team’, ‘National Continuing Education Base of Neurology’, ‘National Training Base for Talents of Life Science and Technology’, the first batch of "Beijing Residency/Specialty Training Base" and ‘Advanced Training Base for Neurology of Ministry of Health’. The Department of Neurology also have 3 national demonstration courses (‘National Quality Course’, ‘National Quality Resource Sharing Course’ and ‘National Bilingual Demonstration Course’. Each year, it trains 23 masters, 14 doctors, 6 postdoctoral fellows, and 40 residents. It also receives 100 advanced training doctors and 40 nurses as well as other trainees, in total 1100 person-times annually. Our training covers 29 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities (except for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan). The trained doctors and nurses have been active in their positions in different hospitals across the country and become the during the development of Neurology in China. Furthermore, based on the Department of Neurology of Xuanwu Hospital, the Department of Neurology of Capital Medical University integrated the neurological resources of the affiliated hospitals of Capital Medical University, forming a large group of neurological disciplines. Our department has compiled a total of 28 textbooks and more than 80 monographs, including the Neurology textbooks of People's Medical Publishing House for Five-Year Programme, Eight-Year Programme, postgraduates, and Residency Training Programme .

The Department of Neurology of Xuanwu Hospital has also been emphasizing on talent training and team construction. At present, it has two approved innovative teams (Parkinson's Disease Research Innovation Team of the Ministry of Education, Academic Innovation Team of Beijing Municipal Collages), one ‘Beijing Scholar’, one ‘Yangtze-River Scholar’, one winner of ‘National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars’, one staff selected into the ‘National New Century Talents Project’, two into the ‘Beijing New Century Talents Project’, and 6 as the ‘Beijing Science and Technology New Stars’. These talents, as leaders or backbones in their teams, have greatly promoted the development of various sub-disciplines.

Since the establishment of the department in 1959, the Department of Neurology of Xuanwu Hospital has formed a historical spirit of aiming high and continuous self-improvement, which has been continually inherited and reinforced. At present, led by Professor Yuping Wang, the core group leaders of the new generation keep inheriting the valuable experience and fine traditions of the older generation, playing a role as experts of the new generation with the goal of ‘scientific and technological innovation and humanistic care’ and the wish to lead in the development of Neurology, aiming to build a first-class domestically and internationally renowned Neurology department, as well as an excellent diagnosis & treatment & clinical research center of neurological diseases, a high-level training center for neurologists, and the leader of innovative neurological services.
